Aquia Creek sandstone is part of the Potomac Group, a Cretaceous package of two to three formations. From oldest to youngest, they are the Patuxent and Patapsco formations with some recognizing an Arundel Fm. between the two. Some authors demote the Potomac Group to formation status with the Patuxent and Patapsco becoming members.
