The RF45 is a good mill but there has been nothing I've done yet that needed the extra weight carrying ability of the RF45, no engine blocks and such. Everything I've made from aluminum or steel has been done equally as well on the G0704. I'm glad I didn't rush into buying CNC conversion parts for the RF45 because I see no benefit in CNCing now.

The mill seems brute force and obvious. As a computer person, and particularly one versed in computer graphics, a mill literally renders in 3D using an x, y, and z axis. The computer does the same for graphics in 2D using only x and y. The lathe cheats using rotating motion. It's like polar coordinates and trig versus reading a map.

Instructions on how to disassemble an RF45 gearbox. Start by Removing the power from the mill, then remove the hex head bolt from under the head, and drain the oil. All the RF45/PM45/Zay7045/MD46 are the same mill with minor variations. Cnczone (forum) has a lot of threads on conversions of these machines including some great ideas on the "other items" such as one shot oiling the dovetails, enclosures, belt drive retrofits and automatic tool changers. One specky conversion is of a PM45 titled cM5k.

The clones are pretty common, and kind of wimpy. Yesterday, I was at the suspension shop getting some springs done for our travel trailer, they had a Force brand RF-45 clone, the length of the column dovetail was shorter, gearbox was smaller, and the pivot circle was 1/3 smaller. I converted a RF45 about 7 years ago and it really was not a fun project at all - lots of custom parts and quite expensive; rolled ballscrews & anti-backlash nuts alone were almost $1000.00 not to mention bearings, drives, motors, and misc. parts.

I too built a CNC mill in the garage for having fun and building stuff. I started with a larger machine, and it's taken about 2 years to do the complete conversion including the belt drive, high speed spindle, and power drawbar.
