Jan 26, 2020. #5. The new Torpedo Captor X is propably the best bet if you need cabinet modeling, but unfortunately the attenuation is fixed to -20db. Fryette Power station has tube section, which can be used reamp the attenuated sound with tubes (to make small wattage amp to sound like 50w well). Tubes sound great but are prone to breaking.

I owned a lot of attenuators, including the Weber, Hotplate, Alex's, and a few others. The Rockcrusher was noticeably better than the Alex's, and lots better than the others. The attenuator will compress the amp's tone slightly but honestly it is pretty negligible and is worth the convenience. Having the Direct Out option on the MASS would be handy for feeding a separate DI signal into some sort of cab emulation (Torpedo, Mesa, Palmer, software plugins, etc).

Switch to the -20db or -16db and the tone comes to its full glory, but at manageable volume levels. These are my 2 favorite positions and have had no complaints about volume from anyone in my house. The -12db starts to get a bit too loud for comfort. The -3/-8db start getting to close to full on volume for my home use.

THis amp, with that power filter choke, is designed to work in some hard working power amp tube effect on the sound, and gets there WAY sooner than the SLO.
