Sometimes, the two broken ends of the wire stay together allowing the signal to pass; other times, when steering, the break opens up, and the signal is interrupted, making the ABS controller think the wheel has locked up. The controller responds by rapidly pulsing the brake on that wheel. The rapid pulsing sounds like a grinding or rubbing sound.

Most likely, the rubbing/grinding is the ball joint heat shield rubbing against rotor -- they tend to flex from rust/heat and start rubbing. If it is it -- then it is an easy fix -- just bend it back slightly.

1. Poor Wheel Bearings. If you are driving your car and it makes a noise when turning and it sounds like grinding, poor wheel bearings can be the cause behind it. Bearings act like a buffer between an axle and the wheel. Due to this, they prevent friction between the two moving parts.

Below are nine possible causes for this grinding noise when braking: 1. Bad Brake Pads Worn-out brake pads are the most common cause of this grinding noise. I know that that CV shaft its worn (it's clicking pretty bad) and the boot is cracked but this noise isn't that. The noise is a scraping/grinding sound. (NOT a rumble)it's most prominent when going between 0-20km/h, and it's still very pronounced between 20 and 100km/h. above ~125km/h it's pretty much totally gone.

So the question becomes why does being in gear impact the scraping condition you're hearing from the front right area of the vehicle. Two things come to mind: 1) In neutral you are in a decelerating condition which places additional load (i.e. weight transfer) on the nose of the car just enough to mask the symptom.

Some of the rear differential gears rotate only during turns, so it makes sense you only heard the noise during turns. The typical reason for that is the gear oil is low for some reason. Suggest to monitor the gear oil level every month for 6 months or so to make sure whatever caused it to go low isn't still happening.

Grinding brakes have a lower pitched sound than squeaking brakes. Slowing down and stopping usually feels different when your brakes are grinding. You'll often be able to feel it too. Often, they'll make your steering wheel shake when braking as well. Squeaky brakes are typically an indication that the brake pads need replaced.

Braking at low speeds creates a different situation than braking at high speeds. When the brakes are applied at high speeds, there's a sudden change in the direction of the vehicle. At low speeds this change happens more slowly. This causes the entire car to shift on its suspension, which also changes the geometry of the suspension.
