Probably more generally useful on a vertical mill, simply because only one axis plus depth of cut is capable of that sort of precision with a typical horizontal mill usage. Depth tends to be a preset, and the "longitudinal" feed is imprecise due to the large round cutter. There are situations in which a crossfeed readout could be useful, however.
